What is it?
MEC provides educational, children’s “explore and play” classes with a focus on outdoor, sensory, and artistic play. Classes will vary based on age range but will typically include an opening circle with a story and short lesson followed by a coordinating play activity or craft. Mini explorers are not expected to sit still!
How does it work?
Classes are offered in series which feature similar topics or themes. Each individual class has a unique activity and lesson.
Science & Nature Club (ages 5-11)
Full season registration is required for these classes.
Minis Class (ages 2-6)
Participants in our "Mini Minis" class can register for the full season (at a discount) or join individual classes a la carte.
Do caregivers stay?
Nature Club- No. This club is a dropoff opportunity for ages 5-11 (K-5th Grades)
Minis Class- Yes. Caregivers are required to stay and are strongly encouraged to participate hands-on in their mini explorers’ learning activities.
What does it cost?
Costs will vary per class/series based on location, duration, and material costs. Generally, classes range from $12-$25 per class. Discounts are offered for subsequent siblings after the first full-price enrollment.
What should I bring?
"Minis"- Weather appropriate, comfy play clothes (maybe even a spare set?), a water bottle, and a blanket or chair to sit on.
Science & Nature Club- Same as above with the addition of a snack or lunch as well as a backpack for transporting belongings.
What ages are these classes appropriate for?
We believe in the benefits of mixed age play and meeting children where they're at in their learning and development. Older children build empathy and boost their confidence by serving as leaders to the younger children. Younger children feel empowered by playing with older children and are more open to new risks and experiences if they see older peers doing them. Each class will have a suggested age range. Nature Club requires a minimum age of 5 since it is dropoff. Minis is recommended for ages 2+.
What is the inclement weather policy?
In the case that inclement weather requires class to be canceled or rescheduled, you will be notified via email at least two hours prior to class. We will also post class updates on our facebook page. A variety of factors will be considered in deciding whether or not to cancel or reschedule class due to weather. While we want to encourage outdoor play in all four seasons, we do want to ensure that our play environment is both safe and enjoyable for mini explorers. Class will be canceled/rescheduled in the case of extreme heat, extreme cold/wind chill, unsafe driving conditions, or severe storms. We do try to carry out class as scheduled if at all possible. Some of our class locations provide indoor space if needed. Some do not.
